Outstanding Teacher Programme (OTP)

The Outstanding Teacher Programme gives good (and outstanding) teachers a set of high level skills and strategies that enable them to become consistently and sustainably outstanding in all areas of their practice. It helps them to:

  • demonstrate higher level understanding of teaching and improve learning for their pupils;
  • coach colleagues in their own school and in other schools to raise performance levels;
  • create a proactive school culture where the quality of teaching and learning is observed, discussed, challenged and enhanced;
  • increase the job satisfaction and create opportunities for further leadership and career progression.

This programme helps teachers to become consistently outstanding in all their professional activities and have a significant impact on how people achieve.

The Improving Teacher Programme (ITP)

Designed by experienced and successful school leaders this highly-effective programme gives developing teachers a set of skills and strategies to reach the next level of professional practice. The programme enables teachers to:

  • provide their students with the best possible learning experience
  • improve standards in their classrooms and schools
  • increase their job satisfaction and quality of experience
  • work more effectively as active members of their school team

A key part of the OLEVI Teaching and Learning Portfolio of school-to-school support, which is helping to increase capacity and drive up standards in schools, the programme, helps teachers deliver consistent high-quality lessons that have a positive measurable impact on student performance.

  • Provides improving teachers with in-depth coaching, tailored to a self-assessment of their teaching.
  • Provides opportunities to deepen their understanding of high-quality classroom practice and teaching and learning. Participants improve their teaching through facilitated practice, observation of colleagues and working with ‘live’ students
  • supports a wider range of teaching activities, including: lesson planning; engagement, challenge, starter activities, plenary sessions, questioning techniques, assessment and developing effective differentiation strategies
  • Supports the aims and implementation of school improvement plans and other national agendas.
  • forms part of the professional development provision or entitlement for staff development within the school’s improvement plan

Commitment
The Improving Teacher Programme consists of six consecutive weekly half-day sessions. Secondary schools need to release three teachers at a time, as learning takes place in groups of three. Primary and special schools may prefer to release one teacher per programme, as ‘learning threes’ can be made up from cluster schools. The work of these teachers is supported by a project manager at Lampton school who attends the first and final sessions and supports the teachers’ progress through the programme in their schools. It is an important coaching role that is pivotal to the success of the delegates.

Eligibility
The Improving Teacher Programme is open to all teachers who want to improve their teaching and want to learn how to deliver consistently good lessons that match sound theory with excellent practice.

Students Leading Learning (SLL)

This is a termly programme designed to develop pupils as observers of teaching and learning. The programme begins with a one day facilitated programme which can be hosted within your own school or an alliance school. Students investigate effective practice and develop the skill of constructive feedback. The structured follow up, carried out within your own school includes:

  • a number of lesson observation and feedback opportunities
  • continuing development in the feedback process
  • continuing exploration into metacognition.

In many schools, cohorts of trained students then contribute to:

  • the selection of new staff
  • training opportunities for NQTs, ITT students and teachers seeking to improve their practice
  • teaching and learning CPD sessions.

The programme has developed to include working in primary schools. This supports schools so they can work with other colleagues and visit other schools, take part in “learning walks “ and enable students to observe lessons and be trained to give constructive feedback.

Students Leading Learning (SLL) is a flexible programme which can be delivered at any key stage within one school or to a number of schools that wish to:

  • build learning partnerships
  • build the capacity of students able to support teacher development and school improvement through informed and skilful conversations about effective teaching and learning
  • develop students as ‘leaders of learning’ or ‘learning detectives’
  • develop metacognition.

The programme builds capacity for improving whole school learning, develops pupil metacognition and improves pupils’ language of learning. It also creates a culture of collaboration between pupils and teachers.

Outcomes (1): pupils will learn how to discuss teaching and learning, identify excellent teaching, observe a lesson and give constructive feedback to teachers.

Outcomes (2): Staff will learn how to develop pupils as future leaders of learning.   At Lampton the programme is being extended to the rest of KS3 and training teachers to support the programme.

Feedback from Staff

“The feedback was great – very precise and the questions they asked were very thought provoking. I’m looking forward to having the next group of SLL observers in my lesson.”

Feedback from Students

“I can see how hard it is to be a teacher now!”
“….you helped me really develop my skills – especially giving feedback”
“I really liked the way we worked together in depth and then tried out what we learned”
